I think dovecot could benefit from a diagram like the "Postfix big picture" where all daemons are listed and their relations/dependencies.
each using their own pipe fd. With v2.0 each service has their own fd (e.g. all imap processes log via the same shared pipe fd, all pop3 processes log via another fd, etc). So it should be better in v2.0 than v1.2..

My idea is to turn back on logging and then trace the dovecot/log process using
strace -p PID -c
but not today, I'd rather do this on the weekend.
It would be possible to make all processes log directly though, by adding -L parameter to the service executables.
That would be interesting.
