BUT (1), doveconf protocols reports:
protocols = $protocols managesieve
doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /path/2/dovecot/dovecot.conf: protocols: Unknown protocol: $protocols
But (2) doveconf -x protocols works:
protocols = imap lmtp pop3 managesieve
