When you are trying to learn, there is no such things as dumb questions. The people who refuse to ask questions are dumb. The people who abuse askers are just plain rude. Go get a coffee and take a few deep breaths - we all need to learn and we learn by asking - not just by reading. N/ On Thu, 2005-06-02 at 21:25, Odhiambo Washington wrote:

I am planing to set up dovecot-imapd on my production-mail server which currently only runs pop3 via qpopper on debian-sarge.
It would be best, if I could only use imapd and use the existing pop3- server (qpopper) as it is. Is this possible?
Yes. Look at dovecot.conf and read it line by line, and then make the decision about the "Protocols we want to ..." - it's in there.
Can the user both use pop3 (qpopper) and imapd (dovecot) in parallel then?
Yes. Just don't let dovecot listen on pop3 port. Let it do only imap. Have you even tested dovecot at all? You cannot implement anything you haven't tested in a production environment, unless you are crazy.
Where does dovecot-imapd store its mails?
Dovecot is not an smtp server that delivers mails.
Does it store its mail in mbox-format in ~/mail, where also e.g. pine or mutt can access the mbox?
What is your problem, really? You don't sound like you are competent to run any server service at all!!
Pretty dumb question I guess, but I want to make sure that nothing goes wrong during installation. It is a must that nothing changes on the server for my users.
All your questions were dumb, anyway.
My conclusion is you are not competent enough to try running any server.
