Yes, rc17 appears to solve the problems. I've had no reports since I upgraded from rc13 to rc17 and turned off workarounds.
FWIW: I've set "maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = no" as a workaround here, and there's no discernable effect on performance.
I think it's a workaround only because it slows down Dovecot enough so this problem just doesn't happen anymore.
That sounds likely. Dovecot feels much faster after rc17 and without the workarounds.
