Sure. Works exactly the same way as for any other IMAP server behind it.

Currently, our clients not only can login to their mailboxes with their e-mail address but also with their accountid. Both the clients e-mail address and accountid are stored in ldap.

Now I need a way to let dovecot rewriting the client's accountid to the respective e-mail address. Is this possible with the proxy-feature of dovecot?

Yes. Just make the pass_filter match both accountid and email address, and add email_address=destuser to pass_attrs.
