The keyword you're looking for is "groupware" - which dovecot isn't.
Now, what *protocols* do those pre-existing clients support to tie them to a groupware solution? MAPI? CalDAV? LDAP? (And I'm pretty sure I can't list even *half* of the contenders ...)
