that's true if your tools and kernel are recent enough, and your filesystem has dir_index enabled... see tune2fs -O dir_index, and e2fsck -D ... if you've done upgrade-in-place on your system a few times it's pretty likely your /home is old enough to be unindexed. (make sure filetype is enabled too while you're in there.)
