I must thank you all for this discussion that clarified numerous points in
record time. Each question is perhaps answerable using Google and some
luck, but knowing what questions to ask...

Now I only wonder what MUA's do support LDAP?

I installed IMAP in the first place because I wanted to be more
independent of any particular MUA, since I frequently despair over their
(mis)features. But accessing my mailstorre remotely is another attractor.
