So, the password storred in the database does not match the enterred one, then the next passdb {} should be tried
passdb { driver = pam }
did you enabled dovecot in PAM? Or is a suitable default in PAM configured?
userdb { driver = passwd }
Just the userdb {} for passwd, no SQL?
