Ahh, I'd failed to get rid of the index files in all of the subfolders. My bad.
Everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks for your help!

Are you sure you deleted the right index? Each folder has one. This error really should go away with deleting the correct dovecot.index.log file.
firing up mutt shows me a message saying that the index is being rebuilt
That's mutt's index, not Dovecot's.
