It crashes. Could you get gdb backtrace? If you started dovecot with ulimit -c unlimited, the core should be written to base_dir (/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/ by default). Then do:

gdb /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-auth /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/core bt full
