I'm using those four packages:
dovecot-common_0.99.11-1.99.jones.1_i386.deb
dovecot-imapd_0.99.11-1.99.jones.1_i386.deb
dovecot-pop3d_0.99.11-1.99.jones.1_i386.deb
dovecot_0.99.11-1.99.jones.1_all.deb
And I just found the problem. The ".imap.index" file needs to be
*owned* by the dovecot user.
