Now, the fact that it was whining about a .tmp file is interesting.
Was there any other whines?
Seems like something(tm) wasn't running as root that should be.

What permissions should I have on the folder /var/run/dovecot ? The owner is root and the group dovecot in my case. The access bits are drwxr-xr-x.
