I initially though this would be the imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle option, but this is currently set and always has been.
I dont think this is a known issue that has been fixed with newer releases, as we have rc2 on another server that does not have this problem.
If you're using SSL, there were problems with SSL connections hanging sometimes. Fixed properly in rc6.
I can't really think of any other reasons for it from Dovecot side. Other reasons could be eg. firewalls in the middle closing the connection.
