[Dovecot] repeat downloads of message headers in 1.0rc19
I upgraded one server to 1.0rc19 (from rc15) over the weekend, and have since received several reports of dovecot erroneously retrieving older messages as new mail. I've seen this myself intermittently on KMail, and users have reported it on Thunderbird, Squirrelmail, and Outlook.
I see some things in the archives that suggest that this was a problem in older 1.0 release candidates, but hadn't experienced the problem myself until just now.
Has anyone else seen this problem?
Regards,
- Brian

I'm not exactly sure what you even mean. "as new mail"? Do you mean
you're using POP3, or do you mean some IMAP flag? Are you using
maildir or mbox?

IMAP, INBOX is in mbox format.
I've had no reports or evidence of this happening anywhere other than INBOX.
The messages headers are being retrieved more than once, and the client is showing them as new mail. I don't know where all the new/read/deleted flags are kept. I suspect some of them are in IMAP, and some in the clients.
I was sufficiently surprised by this to mail the list, as dovecot has been very stable for us. I downgraded this server to 1.0rc17, and I have not seen the problem recur.

Several people have reported this issue (myself included) to the list in the last week. rc18 does not have this issue; I have fallen back to rc18. This happens for a variety of email clients. I haven't seen any reports of a fix (or better) rc20 to fix this.

I can replicate this on rc18 as well.

Hmm.. I'll retest my rc18 server tomorrow just to check, I might
have been mistaken.

Actually, I get the same problem randomly across all my IMAP boxes
(maildir, Linux, using inotify on rc19, no fancy auth) - it's
certainly more frequent in the INBOX though. Same problem, I
upgraded from rc16 and all of a sudden the flags weren't being
preserved. If you wait long enough, you'll see deleted messages
return as new mail too.

Could you try the latest nightly snapshot? If this was caused by some of the index file changes I made, I've done a couple of fixes to them since rc19.

Can you or someone else who has this problem try if reversing the attached patch fixes it?
Although if Patrick's problem is the same one with maildir, then I guess it has something to do with index file changes instead.

First tests suggest it doesn't fix it (to reproduce the problem, I just need to delete and expunge some messages scattered through my INBOX in Thunderbird). I'll try reverting to rc18 to see whether the problem now goes away.

Is the problem really in rc18 -> rc19, and not rc17 -> rc18? If the former, then I guess this is the cause: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2007-January/007509.html

Seems to be. I couldn't reproduce the problem in rc18; the first cycle of delete/expunge showed unread messages, the second was fine. I tried reverting the 007509.html patch on rc19 and that seems fine through two cycles of delete/expunge.

I am currently running rc18 at my site with no problems (Solaris 10, mbox format, INBOX NFS mounted from another Sun box, all other mailbox and cache files on local ZFS disk, no plugins). With rc19, people have problems with the read/unread/deleted flags -- lots of complaints. I have seen it myself. Yes, this is rc18 -> rc19 IMHO.

Have you tried if this is still happening with rc22?

I've upgraded one server to 1.0rc22, and so far, no reports of a repeat of the problem. I haven't seen in in my email/tests, and my users aren't complaining, so it look like this might be fixed. I'll keep the list posted.
