Do you wish to prevent him from reading email he has already received? Or bounce incoming email for this user? Or prevent him from sending email?
Or all of the above?

Hello Bart,

Fastest, easiest and quickly reversible - change their password.

Hello,
Sorry, do you know "What is disable" ?

Maybe you need to be more precise?
'Disable' can mean many things... do you want to REJECT all new/incoming mail for this user? Then you have to do that on your SMTP server side, otherwise, incoming mail will still be delivered to their mailbox.
If you simply want to prevent a user from being able to view their existing email through imap/dovecot - which, by the way, if you go bnack and re-read your original post, is what you asked for - (this would apply to any/all imap clients, including webmail), and from sending through your SMTP server, then - *assuming that you are using the same password backend for both* - simply changing the password is the best way to go, as Bart said. I do this all the time - it is a very effective way to get someone's attention. ;)
Of course, if you are not using the same password backend for imap and smtp - and if this is so, then I'd have to ask *why not!* - you'd have to change both.

Charles

Really, I don't see how anyone can possibly help you with the level of information you've provided, and to be honest the scope of this list probably doesn't cover basic user management, so be thankful for any advice you do receive, and at least provide enough details for people to try.

Hello Peter,

Edward.
Changing their password as suggested will prevent the user from logging into any services which use the passwd database on the machine.
You use dovecot for pop3/imap and sendmail for smtp. That much you have told us. What we don't know is what kind of authentication you use on each of these services. Assuming that changing the password didn't work then this is the information which is needed before any more specific suggestions can be made. Once that is known, the solution should be obvious.
This is also assuming that you are the administrator of the machine in question.

There is a second info needed:
Do people need to authentificate in order to send mail at all?
For Dovecot, there is a user disable passdb, but what's about SMTP?

Well... since this is the 'dovecot' list, I'm thinking you might want to ask that question on the 'smtp' list... ;)
Seriously - dovecot doesn't do 'smtp' - it is an IMAP/POP server.
The answer to your question can only be answered by the person in charge of the smtp server in question, since configuration options vary from server to server and situation to situation.

I'm not sure what the problem is.
What is it about the 'change their password' answer that you don't like? It directly answers your question, and is the best way to achieve what you want to achieve.
