[Dovecot] Dovecot's as server based and mail filters and addressbooks holder?
Hello.
I'm just wondering, that maybe is the time to change the imap -s format or add some more features, are in these day's most people, me also are so called mobile users. And imap is good solution for us but however still some basic things are missing, fore example:
- Server side mail filters. I read mails from home, from office and from webmail. Now when I need to make mail filter, for example to
collect all dovecot mails into one subfolder, I can do it in one computer, and they works, if the computer is online, but if I need to change them, reading email from the another computer, I can't do it.
- Server side address book. Yes, I know, ldap is solution, but installing and configuring the ldap server for some simple global address book, is kind of overkill.
And these rules/address book can be from client to see as subfolder, so every imap capable client can deal with them?
Is this real on not?

Dovecot already has a LDA (local delivery agent) that supports SIEVE for server-side filtering (works great, I'll have it installed on the new server I'm building). This has nothing to do with IMAP, though; that is just a way to access e-mail.

LDAP isn't that hard to set up and it is pretty much globally supported, so trying to shoehorn this into IMAP is not a great idea.

There is another method, that stores all your contacts in 'vcard' like form, in an IMAP folder. It's how the Kolab stuff works, and there is a plugin for Thunderbird, that allows thunderbird to sync with it. When I get it working, I'm going to look at how easy it is to use the vcard format (compared to the XML Kolab format) from any client, and just browse the 'emails' making up my address book.
There seem to be lots of solutions to this problem, including LDAP, SQL, and even web services specifically for keeping your address book no matter where you are. Personally, there needs to be a standard, and seeing as your emails, and filters are now kept on the server, it would be nice if IMAP had some sort of standard for address books as well.

Could you suggest a simple and easy to setup LDAP server for Fedora Core 3 ? Thanks !
Google for "LDAP Linux" shows up so many alternatives, I'd love to have a personal recomendation.

Try the RHEL 4 reference guide. That will be pretty close to FC3.

How do You manage these server side filters?

Actually LDAP isn't so easy set up or manage. Personally I cant use ldap connection in office, as port is closed. And this is lately very common, actually in most government offices only ports 80 and 443 and true proxy server are open from inside to outside.

Well then, since you can't use external email from the office, why would you care about an external addressbook? And if the mail server is internal, then there's no problem? Don't really see this as constructive...
