[Dovecot] reply-to address of the list
Hi,
is there a chance to alter the list behaviour to not use the sender address of a posting in the reply-to field but dovecot@dovecot.org instead?
That way one has to either use "reply to all" in the MUA or manually enter dovecot@dovecot.org in any replies. And a "reply to all" duplicates postings because the posting once goes to the list and once to the original poster, that get's the reply twice then.
Or maybe I am missing something ... :-)

It has been discussed at least once before in this list. Basically not everyone wants it, and if you do you can set the header yourself.
I don't like it either with some lists. When I'm posting a question to a mailing list, I want to get a private reply since I'm not reading every single mail in the mailing list.
I guess it's the exact opposite when you're just trying to help people and don't really care all that much if you see the reply or not :)

Private replies make the archives less useful, though.

Didn't realize that mailman offered that choice, a cool feature.

:-), I think I see your point.

I didn't know about it either, but I still can't find it. Can someone point it out, pretty please?

View the full headers of messages from this list, There's a batch of List-* headers. One of them being List-Post: which would be the address to use to post to the list! :) There's a whole pile of handy headers there.
Too bad I can't get the bloomin "display mailing list header" plugin to work with TB 1.5 *sigh*

I take it you're using one of those semi-broken MUAs that doesn't have "Reply to List" functionality.

Yes, indeed, and from time to time it even is fully-broken :-)
And as I see, it is the same one that you are using ...

In that case try Ctrl-L.

Since my very broken MUA (outlook xp) doesn't have reply-to-list...this is from my procmail recipe:
# Put mail from Dovecot into Dovecot Folder :0
^List-Id.*
{ :0f | formail -A 'Reply-To: dovecot@dovecot.org :0 $MAILDIR/.Lists.Dovecot/
}

While I do not agree with everything there, I think the main point is valid.
Personally, I use "Reply All" in Thunderbird, so the mail goes to the list and the author. If somebody wants no personal replies, he's free to set a reply-to header (like I do).

Please not. Thank you.
[ rant about the own MUA ]
Fix your MUA or change it.

Yes, you kill the possibility for people to use the Reply-To: Header on their own. And more can be read under the repyl-to-considered-harmful link in another email.
