Hi
Using Apple Mail I cannot make subdirectories within new directories I have made on a Debian Dovecot-driven IMAP server (version 0.99.11-3).
Some users, having used Exchange, expect to be able to do this. However I can't make it happen, even after doing some tests by chmod-ing the top-level directories to 777 and enabling the
mail_full_filesystem_access = yes
option on a test install.
Views, comments and remarks much appreciated! Rory

Don't seem to be able to do it in mutt either, so perhaps it isn't part of the IMAP spec?
Elucidation would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Rory

You cannot create subfolders when using mbox (IMAP has nothing to do with it). If you need this functionality, you will have to switch to the maildir format.

Thanks for the mail John. Yes, I feel suitably sheepish.
Apologies, Rory

That's definitely wrong.
While this is a dim area of imap, working with subflolders (which are directories on the server side) and mbox mail folders is definitely possible.
The ususal restriction is that mailboxes are imposs^Wdiscouraged on the same level as subfolders, i.e you can have mailboxes on the tips of the tree, only, not on the nodes. Some clients (Eudora, notably) appear to have less problems with that than others (e.g. Mozilla).

I'd argue that what I am describing is more accurate than what you are describing.

The mbox format does not support subfolders _as originally defined_ (it's just a catenation of messages into a single file). The maildir format does (and in fact that feature was one of the reasons it was created, the primary one being NFS-safe behavior).
I am not arguing that it is impossible to use mbox's in such a way as to emulate multiple folders using mbox files (and I believe both pine and Mutt do so). I am simply saying that any software doing that has to do so outside of the mbox format itself (and AFAIK, dovecot doesn't do it at all).
