Hello everyone.
I'm in the process of migrating my mail server to Debian running exim4 and dovecot. I was previously using exim4 and dovecot on Slackware and I moved the configs over, however I can't get dovecot working with exim on the new system.
These configs worked fine previously. I did have to make some minor changes, but overall everything is mostly the same as it was.
dovecot config: https://pastebin.com/Hrhj6xeb exim config: https://pastebin.com/bAQ9mTJb
No matter what I do, I'm getting this when mail is received:
dovecot_delivery transport output: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot/deliver-error.log: Permi ssion denied
I've tried everything, even going as far as setting permissions on /var/log/dovecot to a+rwx recursive (solely as a test) but I still get the same message.
Help getting this working would be greatly appreciated since I've exhausted my own knowledge trying to wrench it into submission.
Thanks.

Your exim systemd unit is likely defining readwrite locations that exclude that location. Who owns the /var/log/dovecot directory? Can you try this: chown -R mail: /var/log/dovecot ?

Some thoughts, as I’m on the road:
Who owns the /var/log/dovecot directory?
Does that particular log file exist?
That particular log file is written during ‘lda’, therefore, I believe, as the user for whom the Mail is (system user or virtual mail user).
Kind regards,
Edmund

It doesn't really matter. Dovecot can be running as root and I will still have the same issue. For example right now:

I'll be honest, I don't know what any of those things are but I'll look into them.

The systemd service file can be read here 0.
Could you test if the following fixes the issue?
Edit the service file:
sudo systemctl edit exim4-daemon-light.service
And add:
[Service] ReadWritePaths=/var/log/dovecot
This allows the sandboxed Exim process to write to /var/log/dovecot while keeping all other protections.

Ohhh no, this shouldn't apply in my setup as I'm not using systemd to manage the exim service.

Could you test if the following fixes the issue?
Edit the service file:
`sudo systemctl edit exim4-daemon-light.service`
And add:
[Service]
ReadWritePaths=/var/log/dovecot
This allows the sandboxed Exim process to write to /var/log/dovecot
while keeping all other protections.
