Dovecot is configured to use /var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb whereas your LDA uses /usr/local/dovecot/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb . You do not have symlinks to merge both locations, do you?

Check, why the Dovecot LDA is using another config file.

Found it!!!!!!! Thank youm thank you, thank you... this was delivery config in postfix that was using /usr/local/dovecot/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb. DUH!
