[Dovecot] problems deleting folders
I've been having this problem for quite some time now of not being able to remove folders. I'm using:
Fedora Core 2 dovecot-0.99.10.4-4
And dovecot is setup as using imaps (w/ SSL) and mbox files (instead of maildir).
I've done a small amount of tracing to see what the problem is, and it looks like what happens is when all messages in a folder is removed, there's still a 0-byte file lying around. And the "delete" command issued from mail clients (I've used both Thunderbird and MS Outlook) end up trying to throw the file into Trash instead of somehow sending a delete command. This then results in an error. Maybe this is normal IMAP behavior, I don't know. But that's what looks like is happening.
If anyone knows of a good solution to this, I would really appreciate it.
I'd rather avoid using maildir but if anyone knows whether this will definitely solve the problem, then I'll make the switch.
Thanks
Sorry for asking this again. But I'd really just like to hear whether anyone else running in the same configuration has this problem.
Basically, I'm using Fedora Core 2 dovecot-0.99.10.4-4
And mbox instead of maildir.
Is anyone using mbox able to delete subfolders through their mail client?
What about users using maildir?
BTW, I am able to rename folders without any problem.
Thanks

I highly doubt anyone else is using such an antiquated version of Dovecot. Have you considered updating to 0.99.13 ?
Is anyone using mbox able to delete subfolders through their mail client?
Is there any particular reason you're using mbox over Maildir? Just curious...
What about users using maildir?
I'm using Maildir, and have been using Dovecot since 0.99.11.. no problems deleting sub-folders.
BTW, I am able to rename folders without any problem.

I think 0.99.10.4 is the version we're running here on everything except test system(s). I've hesitated going beyond that because of various warnings about mbox problems in later versions. Also because it's stable enough that the next leap I'd rather do is to a 1.0 version (which I am running on a test system).

Thunderbird with default settings moves deleted messages to Trash folder and since mbox doesn't support inferior IMAP folders folder deletion will fail.
Go to your account settings and select any other deletion action in server settings.

Eudora has no problems deleting subfolders (which are Unix directories in the mbox case).

Thanks all!
Another note, I believe MS Outlook does the same thing as Thunderbird, since I saw the same results using that.
Tomi Hakala's response helped me out:
