[Dovecot] dovecot-shared Problem
Hi,
first, sorry for my english, i hope u understand me :-/
I try to set up dovecot with imap and maildir. I run into a permission problem. I need to have read and execute rights of all folders and mails for the group (needed by the backup deamon).
first I tried with umask, but this only affect folders and no mails. Then I read about dovecot-shared and tried this. Permissions are now ok but and this is a big but., I have troubles with thunderbird.
I copied a folder from an pop3 account to the imap account (Inbox->subfolder). Now all mails are unread. OK i mark all as read. Now I move a message to the inbox and back to the subfolder an wonder, the mail is now marked as unreaded again.
When i set up the mailboxes without the dovecot-shared file, the behaviour above is gone!! But my permission problem is back :-(
Permissions of dovecot-shared is 750 and the mainfolder is 750 with g+s
can anybody help me?
thank u alot

I don't understand how a backup daemon could work if it isn't run as root.

imapsync
root is never needed, not even unsecure permissions is needed

i was thinking backup daemon "in general", since the OP talked about file permissions. with imapsync file permissions wouldn't seem to come into play?

i don't use root for various security reasons. i dont understand what imapsync is good for my backup? my deamon is coming with rsync from an other host.

rsync all files, exclude mailfiles in rsync
in imapsync sync all mails with same auth to another host eg same host
you do rsync to
my deamon is coming with rsync from an other host.

same problem exists for backup of runnning mysql server, one have to
dump db before it can be backupped
never make backup on live files
i have thinked about make backup of email aswell but i found it hard
to do anything there, since its part of the problem to get the restore

Easiest solution: Upgrade to Dovecot v1.2 and just set up the directories' permissions the way you want them. Dovecot will use those permissions for all files it creates.
is the dovecot version 1.2 fully compatible with debian lenny? its only the 1.0.15 version in the main repo.
