I set the host to 127.0.0.1 now. And my pg_hba.conf looks like that:

# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD # Mail stuff host mail mailreader 127.0.0.1/32 md5

Shouldn't the last column here match your "default_pass_scheme" above? Maybe change "default_pass_scheme" to "md5-crypt" or "md5"?
