I wonder why it does that only for 0.3% of LMTP cases? (160 of almost 50000 LMTP sessions).
I was trying to figure on based on what it decides to do "snippet" instead of "mail stream" but no success so far (will look more tomorrow).
Added inotifywatch to one of problematic mailboxes and will see what is visible from kernel point of view regarding future ghost email files (maildir here).
