They should basically be the same. Hopefully at some point they will be exactly the same.

I'm asking because when I tried out 'deliver' a few weeks ago I was seeing all sorts of nasty index corruption errors in the logs...and obviously lots of fixes have gone into core dovecot (but haven't seen many go into dovecot-lda)

Probably means you had different settings for Dovecot in general than for deliver. Deliver currently uses its own dovecot-deliver.conf file where you must have the same lock settings etc. This will change once I get the new master/config process code working.
