protocol pop3 { pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv pop3_client_workarounds = outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh } auth_verbose = yes auth default { mechanisms = plain digest-md5 cram-md5 passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/mailuser } userdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/mailuser } user = root }

When it happens, try logging in manually. What exactly happens? Does it write the "+OK Dovecot ready"? Does it reply to commands? Does it hang only after you've given PASS command? See http://wiki.dovecot.org/TestPop3Installation

I'm guessing this is normal?..

So people are using TLS to log in.

And these don't, I suppose? Is it related to TLS? Again, when it happens if you could log in normally with telnet, try logging in with OpenSSL's s_client (the same wiki URL tells how).

Looks like it hangs IMAP as well?
Also stracing the correct login process (easier to test if you only use one) or dovecot-auth process could be helpful. http://wiki.dovecot.org/Debugging/ProcessTracing
