[Dovecot] beta8 + mbox + Thunderbird
Hi all,
I'm still using beta8 (on FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE).
Recently I put a co-worker who's using Thunderbird (1.5.0.4) on it and he seemed to have lost some messages (which were delivered on the spool since seen on procmail logfile).
I switched him on another server to play safe and tried to test it myself but failed to reproduce the issue. I myself use mutt on a daily basis with no problem with that beta8.
Did someone experienced the same (I read about some similar issue on the list but with maildir format - I'm using mbox) ?

I forgot to say that, when this occured, I fist thought about index corruption and did the following :
. remove the dovecot indexes for that user on the server
. remove *.msf files on Thunderbird (my understanding beeing that these are the local TB indexes).
That didn't change anything.

As far as I know Dovecot has never deleted a message unless the client has requested it to do so.
Did the user (or his client) move those messages to some other mailbox or were they lost in INBOX?

I don't think it has happened with maildir either. There was a bug for a while in non-released CVS version where messages saved through Dovecot weren't properly saved into maildir.

Just greeping the mbox file (or all of the user's mboxes) should show if it's still there.

What I did see occasionally with Mozilla and Thunderbird was that a message that had been moved to another mailbox showed up in the INBOX and the destination mailbox, and disappeared in _both_ mailboxes when deleted from one. Not sure who is to blame here, but Dovecot's mbox handling still seems to have "issues", like the occasional duplication of mails, and mails status being reset to unread.

The issue has been experienced on 3 or 4 messages (I switched the user on another server (dovecot 0.9) as soon I saw that, so I don't have much material to examine).
One seemed to have been lost in the INBOX (a message for which there was no TB filter), 2 or 3 were supposed to be (should have been) automatically moved by a simple thunderbird message filter (such as "from foo@bar" go to "foo" mailbox). But they did not show in the destination box.

I read on the list an issue were messages weren't actually lost but found in some temp directory (but, again, I'm using mbox, not maildir).
Just greeping the mbox file (or all of the user's mboxes) should show if it's still there.
We opened the INBOX with mutt -f on the server, saw the messages, then they dissapeared (not sure if we had already left mutt or not), from the server and were not seen on the client.
But I don't succeed in reproducing the phenomenon.
