[Dovecot] Migration from pop3 to imapd
Dear list,
I am planing to set up dovecot-imapd on my production-mail server which currently only runs pop3 via qpopper on debian-sarge.
It would be best, if I could only use imapd and use the existing pop3- server (qpopper) as it is. Is this possible?
Can the user both use pop3 (qpopper) and imapd (dovecot) in parallel then?
Where does dovecot-imapd store its mails? Does it store its mail in mbox-format in ~/mail, where also e.g. pine or mutt can access the mbox?
Pretty dumb question I guess, but I want to make sure that nothing goes wrong during installation. It is a must that nothing changes on the server for my users.
Best regards and thanks for your help

Yes. Look at dovecot.conf and read it line by line, and then make the decision about the "Protocols we want to ..." - it's in there.

Yes. Just don't let dovecot listen on pop3 port. Let it do only imap. Have you even tested dovecot at all? You cannot implement anything you haven't tested in a production environment, unless you are crazy.
Where does dovecot-imapd store its mails?
Dovecot is not an smtp server that delivers mails.

What is your problem, really? You don't sound like you are competent to run any server service at all!!

All your questions were dumb, anyway. My conclusion is you are not competent enough to try running any server. -Wash http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html -- +======================================================================+ |\ _,,,---,,_ | Odhiambo Washington <wash@wananchi.com> Zzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ | Wananchi Online Ltd. www.wananchi.com |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-'| Tel: +254 20 313985-9 +254 20 313922 '---''(_/--' `-'\_) | GSM: +254 722 743223 +254 733 744121 +======================================================================+ Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

:) I agree, but don't advocate this on the openbsd lists unless your shorts are fireproof :)

I agree that the poster was a bit too harsh and abusive. But when someone uses the phrase "production server" it's quite reasonable to expect the questions to reflect a professional-level of understanding. The post in question did not.
Personally I hesitate to post questions on mailing lists until after having consulted the documentation. And I agree with the harsh poster insofar as someone running a "production server" ought to know the basics of TCP/IP and mail protocols.
The cost of free software is hard work and understanding. Free software is not about freeloading.

I can't see why not. After all, qpopper's supposed to coexist with UW-IMAP, which is much less friendly ;)
However, it would be safest not to use the "-S" option to qpopper as that makes it much more aggressive with caching and can lead to corrupt mailboxes if something else modifies them.
Where does dovecot-imapd store its mails? Does it store its mail in mbox-format in ~/mail, where also e.g. pine or mutt can access the mbox?
Wherever you like! (It's very configurable, see the example config and the Wiki.) For sharing with qpopper, I think you'd want it to be in "mbox" format (but Dovecot can also do Maildir format).
Hope this helps, Chris
