[Dovecot] "Documentation" link from http://www.dovecot.org/
On the Dovecot home page http://www.dovecot.org/ we have a link "Documentation" which links to the Dovecot 1.x wiki ( http://wiki.dovecot.org/ ).
There is a question mark in my mind as to whether that is a good idea considering as how the current stable version of Dovecot appears to be 2.0.x.
In the Dovecot 1.x wiki, there is a pink stripe across the top of the page which says that the documentation is for Dovecot 1.x. It looks as though the intention was to make that prominent so as to guide visitors to the right documentation, and I think to a certain extent it may work.
But I am wondering if perhaps the stripe could be too easily missed. People might start browsing around in the Dovecot 1.x wiki without it even occurring to them that there was a whole another wiki for 2.x.
I have an idea:
Perhaps the "Documentation" link on the home page could be re-worked to something like
Documentation v2.x v1.x
where "v2.x" and "v1.x" are links to the two wikis.
This would make it obvious that there was different documentation available for v2.x and v1.x, and encourage visitors to choose the appropriate set.

Wonder if http://dovecot.org/index2.html looks ok.
Also I've been wondering about what to do with wiki.dovecot.org. It would be nice if it was the same as wiki2, except there are existing links that would break. But is that a real problem? Most links would still stay the same.
Another possibility could be to just make wiki.dovecot.org redirect to wiki2.dovecot.org and wiki.dovecot.org/blah/ to wiki1.dovecot.org/blah/. Existing links would work and then wiki2 links would start showing up more and maybe some day in future it would be easy to do wiki3. But the problem with this is then that people who have a link to wiki.dovecot.org could be reading obsolete information..

I'll reiterate my earlier suggestion...
Just have wiki.dovecot.org be a landing page with very prominent links to each version. wiki1.dovecot.org would be the wiki for 1.x, wiki2 for 2.x (and wiki25 could be for 2.5 if it needs its own), and wiki3 could be for 3.x...

To avoid breaking existing links, wiki.dovecot.org/Foo would either have to:
a) automatically redirect to one of wiki1/Foo, wiki2/Foo
b) Show the user links to wiki1/Foo, wiki2/Foo
Wonder how much trouble b) would be to implement. Still, this behavior has the downside of getting lots of links to wiki1, wiki2, etc. all around the internet which could be pointing to obsolete information by the time they're being read by people.

Not as long as you retain the older pages instead of removing them.
wiki1 would *always* be for version 1 stuff, etc, etc...
Postfix retains old pages for archival purposes but obsoletes them by adding a watermark on the page background.

Interesting. Though for me, the version numbers are too small to be useful. I tried it through Firefox 3.6.8 and Microsoft's version 8 offering with the same result.

Ah OK. If I were to suggest anything meaningful, it would only be after much further pondering.

I forgot to say - it looks fine to me - I like it... :)

I know they're small, but I didn't want them to make the bar any higher. Also having something like "Documentation v1.x v2.0" looks like of ugly-confusing.

Ahh... now I see what William was talking about - those numbers were so small I didn't even notice them... ;)
I agree they are too small to even be useful.
I suggest removing them completely and just name the link "Documentation/Wiki"...
Then, again, I suggest that takes you to a wiki.dovecot.org landing page that only has 2 (for now) BIG links, one to each version, which then take you to wiki1. or wiki2.... then the top of each can still have links back to the other version(s) like it does now.
