Is there any chance this bug is related to MacOS proc titles being
mis-identified (e.g. containing garbage) in the 1.2.x tree?

No. Also, I've never heard of proctitles problems with OSX. With v1.2 it doesn't even use those ugly hacks that v2.0 does, unless you manually enabled them?
