[Dovecot] IMAP and Outlook XP Contacts
I was wondering, does Dovecot's IMAP server hand Outlook XP's contact lists? I tried to enter a contact on my IMAP server and received an error from Outlook stating that the Contacts formatting was too complex and thus couldn't be saved.
I went ahead and swung my box over to MailDir and scrapped Sendmail for Postfix [for maildir support], I was wondering, would this issue continue? In other words, by swinging over to MailDir, would Dovecot be able to handle Outlook's Contacts information? Will L G

Apparently 'tis possible. From the Courier-IMAP list:
“Good news, everyone!” -- Prof. H. Farnsworth
Insight Connector for Courier-IMAP is a commercial plugin for Microsoft Outlook™ that allows native Outlook groupware capabilities using Courier-IMAP. Outlook users can perform tasks typically available only when using the Exchange server, including folder sharing. Some of the features include folder sharing, public folders sharing, appointments/tasks scheduling, real-time data management, calendar sharing and other collaborative tasks.
A trial version of Connector can be downloaded from http://courier.bynari.net. This software is supported by Bynari.

Just because this particular implementation is commercial doesn't mean that an open source version couldn't be done. So, you are wrong - the answer is not 'no', it is 'yes, it *can* be done, but apparently there is no open source/free version at this time'.
I only posted this as a response to your question about using imap to store/retrieve contacts.
And if it matters, I was as surprised as anyone when I read that announcement.

you asked about contacts via imap. that is definitly a "no". i am pretty good aware of exchange compatible groupware solutions. but that is beyond imap.

No, I didn't - someone else did. I posted that link in response to your message saying it cannot be done via IMAP.

Tell it to the Bynari people who have apparently done it using Courier, as this post claimed. The link is broken right now, so apparently you cannot go and read details at the moment.

As someone else posted, you can store pretty much anything in IMAP. I have seen other references to implementations that allowed the storing of contacts on an IMAP server.
So, you are wrong - it CAN be done, but no one is saying it is some kind of RFC implemented standard.

Quite true. Sync Kolab is an extension to Thunderbird which reads a selected folder an synchronizes it with the local address book and calendar. I haven't explicitly used it w/ dovecot, but with other IMAP servers.

I asked some cats in IRC's #linuxhelp chan and they stated that it's not supported under regular IMAP, that I would need something like OpenExchange or Open-Xchange in order to get that portion to work.
After googling around, that's when I noticed there aren't that many free alternatives, the few that are, are so limited and restricted to i386 machines only [closed source unless you pay]. Will L G

Insight Connector for Courier-IMAP is a commercial plugin for Microsoft OutlookT that allows native Outlook groupware capabilities using Courier-IMAP. Outlook users can perform tasks typically available only when using the Exchange server, including folder sharing. Hi - My attempt to answer this is as much an attempt to gain clarity before I head down this same path - so am keen to be corrected here, but...
Providing a contact list is, is NOT a feature of any mail serving protocol, imap or pop (inspite what can apparently be extracted from courier with suitable wizardry and $)
It is a capability and legit use of an LDAP directory type server
This is how both ms exchange and open-Xchange and probably many other
collaboration/groupware servers essentially achieve this?
Using LDAP can also work _WITHOUT_ the whole groupware 'thing' in between - if the client can do ldap speak
Outlook can do ldap speak with various degrees of effectiveness depending on the version and the degree to which that version is standards compliant - there are work arounds to get outlook speaking to openLDAP correctly (I stumbled on to this as part of someone discussing this prob:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325314)
6)It should there for be possible outlook to get contacts from openLDAP -without purchasing any black magic, but probably with a little jigery pokery
Thanks for any coments and hope this gives some direction for WLG Glenn

Well, with some wrapper software, you can store any arbitrary data on an IMAP server. But that doesn't make it a inherent feature of the IMAP protocol. Just as an IMAP client that stores its contacts in a special "Contacts" folder. I wonder that nobody made a RFC that does that. Probably using LDAP is good enough.

"Server not found". Hm, looks like like inconsistent dns.
On the product pages of bynari.net, the list "Insight Server as the IMAP server" as a system requirement of the Insight Connector, nothing about Courier. Gives not much confidence to their software...

I know some people who have, I think, deployed Bynari for a client. I
think this client has a few tens of desks or maybe a hundred or three.
I have certainly seen & used Binari in their trial installation and
it seems ok.
It doesn't handle contacts as well as Outlook-and-Exchange but it's
quite adequate.
Binari has been around a while now - at least a couple of years - and
I'd have reasonable confidence in its stability.
I just wish there was a fully OSS solution to email & calendaring
that was as good as Outlook-and-Exchange, but I'd imagine that that's
some time away.

From what I was reading, Outlook Contacts and Journal entries were little more than craftily laid out emails. I was reading about it over at Open-Xchange, the open source version of Suse/Novell's Open Exchange. They used MS's SDK for Exchange Server to 'back engineer' the whole process?!?!
I'm going to stick with Dovecot/Postfix/Spamassassin combo... After getting Postfix [going from MBOX to MAILDIR] figured out and configured, I don't intend on changing over to something else anytime soon. Will L G
