Well, do you see any imap-auth processes running? Also try deleting
everything from login processes directory
(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/login/ by default), you probably have some
stale socket files in there.

And what does your "auth" variable contain? At least you've changed it
to both "auth" and "vpopmail" before :)
