You did it right.

But I don't understand why it says this. Maybe you somehow managed to 
corrupt the patch file when transferring? Like if you transferred it 
from windows it might have changed the linefeeds from LF -> CRLF. It 
goes in just fine with my Linux and FreeBSD 4.8.
