[Dovecot] dies on start-up: Auth process

I'm making some slow progress.
It seemd to be better after I've added a configuration option for 
cyrus-sasl2 support and set the auth_userdb = passwd.

It loads.

but logging in is another matter entirely.

I can't seem to authenticate.
