[Dovecot] pop3 authentication failure - password mismatch

If I change passdb to "pam", then dovecot will exist immediate with
errors.  See below:

Jul 22 22:16:34 hsiufen dovecot: Dovecot v1.0-stable starting up
Jul 22 22:16:36 hsiufen dovecot: child 7893 (auth) returned error 89
Jul 22 22:16:36 hsiufen dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down
Jul 22 22:16:36 hsiufen dovecot: auth(default): Unknown passdb type 'pam'

Maybe there is something else I should fix here instead of changing passdb?
