Okay, so you have the following options set in dovecot.conf:

disable_plaintext_auth = no

auth default {
  # Space separated list of wanted authentication mechanisms:
  #   plain digest-md5 cram-md5 apop anonymous
  mechanisms = plain
}

I'd recommend turning on the following debug options and then watching the dovecot.log:

auth_verbose = yes
(verbose_ssl = yes)
