I have seen a problem which may be similar. I was doing filtering with a
old small laptop running Evolution on FC4. The swap space was configured
as the default during FC4 installation. Since laptop has small memory,
swap space was small.

During a filtering run with quite a few emails, Evolution would run out
of swap space and hang.
