I intended to implement it, but I've still not gotten around to doing  
it. So yes, it's still needed.

Probably pretty bad.

Maybe a couple of day's work, but I'm not sure how much better it  
would make the performance compared to disabling the attribute cache  
completely. Might be just as bad..
