The problem turned out to be that I hadn't included the "@default-realm" in 
the username part of the passwd-file. Which I found by enabling 
"auth-verbose".

username at default-realm:{PLAIN}plainpassword

Which is sensible as we can then use the same scheme for other domains if we 
ever need to.
