My users have Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 and I don't see this problem.  It's 
true the message files are not deleted immediately, but they are deleted 
when Thunderbird closes.  This seems to be true even if Thunderbird's 
"Tools>Server Settings>Expunge Inbox on Exit" is not checked.

Using dovecot beta9 and Maildir format.
