[Dovecot] /etc/passwd authentication: ERR authentication failed

So the password really exists in /etc/passwd? And in crypt-format, not
in plaintext?

Either Dovecot doesn't get the password, or it's wrong.. You could try
setting auth_debug_passwords=yes to see what it says.
