Gerhard,

 if you switch to dovecot LDA, you would basically be replacing
procmail.  dovecot LDA will work with both mbox and Maildir file storage
formats (as well as a few others I believe)

dovecot LDA uses sieve for its scripting language, compared to procmail
which has its own language, so if you migrate from procmail you'll need
to be sure to migrate any scripts as well from procmail to sieve format.

I haven't done any sieve migration yet and just recently got dovecot LDA
working with my sendmail installation on my test machine.  I'm still in
the middle of testing with it so I don't have all the answers yet.
