setting pop3_lock_session=yes works as expected (ca. 1.1.2 from hg):

+OK Dovecot ready.
user login
+OK
pass password
+OK Logged in.
list
-ERR [IN-USE] Couldn't open INBOX: Timeout while waiting for lock
(closes connection).
