You can use vchkpw with Dovecot's passdb checkpassword too.

As for vpopmail backend.. I thought
http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/rev/597e18c0bc7e fixed the crash.
Maybe I'd need something else too, gdb backtrace from the crash would be
helpful again.
