MYSQL_CONFIG looked like it could be yes, no or path.

   if test -n "$MYSQL_CONFIG"; then
   ac_cv_prog_MYSQL_CONFIG="$MYSQL_CONFIG" # Let the user override the  
test.


I add the following to env and configure worked for me.

MYSQL_CONFIG=/opt/local/bin/mysql_config5
