Possible apologies re grannies/egg-sucking, but:

Where you want to find out what a file "is" in situations like this, you 
may find the program "file" useful

luser at myhost:~$ file /usr/lib/dovecot/expire-tool
/usr/lib/dovecot/expire-tool: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, 
version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 
2.6.15, stripped

On Ubuntu, the "file" program is provided by the package "file".
