The following does not have anything to do with the main thrust of your 
question, but:

Storage of e-mail does not fit into the purposes normally associated 
with '/usr'.

All other things being equal, you might want to consider trying to 
arrange it so that mail is stored somewhere under '/var' or '/home'.

That is not to say storing mail under '/usr' won't work; it is just that 
it is unusual, and by doing this you are setting yourself (or the person 
who comes after you) up for potential confusion and/or problems later on.

a.k.a. Try not to blow against the wind unless you have something 
worthwhile to gain from it.
