Also consider using the S3QL ( http://code.google.com/p/s3ql/ ) 
filesystem, which stores files chunked on the backend (e.g. Amazon S3).

This ought to work well for dbox alternate storage, and archived mbox 
mail (though it may be worth arranging for indexes to be stored locally).
