[Dovecot] dovecot can't see mail that is there

Indeed creating the /var/empty directory as read-only + changing my
<mail_location> to

   mail_location = mbox:/var/empty:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=MEMORY

resolved the issue.
